THE OFFERING OF A BURNING CANDLE BEFORE OUR ALTARS AND SHRINES IS AN ACT OF PRAYER TO GOD, OUR BLESSED MOTHER, OR SAINTS.
WATCH AND PRAY
Because it signifies our watchfulness, we call it a vigil light. We call it a votive light because we pray by means of this shining, silent intercessor.
LIGHT OF THE WORLD
The Church employs candles widely in divine worship. She blesses them on Candlemas day, uses them freely in her liturgy and in administering the Sacraments. Our Bible is full of examples of the religious use of fire and flame by God's people. In describing Himself, Christ said,"I am the light of the world."
A BURNING PRAYER
We light a candle to show honor to God. It is a mark of our dedication, of our confidence in His presence and promises. It is a sign also of our own fidelity.
A SPIRITUAL GIFT
Through our vigil light we give outward, visible evidence of our spiritual desires just as we do when we fast, sacrifice our own will, and give alms to the poor. Thus, as we go to our daily tasks, the candle's flame continues to express our worship, praise and petition.
GOD'S RESPONSE
Christ assures us that not even a cup of cold water given in His name will go without its reward. Hence, we can be confident that He will be pleased with our prayerful offering of a vigil light.
